Nephthys
CloudCatcher Reclaiming WitchCamp is birthed like an egg on the ocean of primordial waters. An idea so clear to us, the ones creating it, yet so uncertain to everyone around us. In this tremulous moment we thought and decided to act as if it might be a once-only camp, the first and the last because although we knew we could do it once, it would have to be passed over to community if it were continue. The camp would need participants to love it enough to pay to attend and to bring their friends, as well as organizers to step up and do the work involved in putting it on and nurturing it, year to year.
We chose a story of birth and solidarity that we felt linked us not just into the mythos, but also into the sisterhood of all other Reclaiming WitchCamps, a story that said every child of an idea is different – and equal – and that the whole cannot function without all the parts. Four parts to our story, four children, four gods. Egypt. The great Goddess of Night, of sky, of the Milky Way stretching over us and giving birth, in one birthing, to four beings. Osiris. Set. Isis. Nephthys. Like four sides of a pyramid, holding to the earth and pointing to the sky, four directions anchoring our camp, four pieces of the puzzle of the gods, four different aspects of divinity. Closer than brother and sister, brother and brother, sister and sister – though they are all that, too – closer than lovers, than husband and wife – though they are also that – close as twins, but there are four; a quartet, each bound together from the very first moments of their existence, of the idea of them – and yet, separate.
Osiris. He of the Nile. The river that sustains all life, whose floods yearly bring the rich fertile soil to the fields, feeding, watering the crops. The river-road that leads not just from kingdom to kingdom through the upper, middle and lower realms of Egypt, but even into the Underworld. Bringing life this river also carries death, by its absence in the years it doesn’t flood and also as the symbol of the journey of death. The fish, the crocodiles, hippopotamuses – they live in this water of life. Civilization cannot exist without it; cities cannot hold without farmers, storehouses, green and grain and fruit. Everything comes back to this, this rain that runs horizontally along the land instead of falling from the skies; the tears, the blood, the sweat of Egypt. Life is the river.
Isis. She is the throne of the realm known as Egypt. She is its cities and temples, she is the laws and the learning. She it is who teaches all there is to know; how to spin and weave flax, how to write and paint the sacred stories and how to record the crops, the rains, the stored grain. She brings regency, the one who sits with her in the throne is lord of the land, is king, is pharaoh.
